Meet Your Therapist!
Hello! My name is Emma (pronouns she/her). I’m looking forward to us working together.
I didn’t grow up wanting to be a therapist. I went to college and became an anthropology major. After college, I ended up working in a group home setting. Through this job, I realized I wanted to be able to support people even more.
I’ve been to therapy at different ages and stages of my life. I learned what it felt like to have a space to be myself and express myself openly. Having this experience also influenced my decision to become a therapist. I believe everyone should feel comfortable to be themselves and therapy can be a place where that begins to happen.
I started my career as a child and adolescent therapist. While growing personally and professionally, I began reflecting on how I wanted to progress as a therapist.
Between my own struggles with low self-esteem in the past, (and sometimes present), being diagnosed with ADHD in my late 20’s, and many other experiences; I found myself intrigued by different approaches. I turned my attention to trauma therapy, ADHD research, as well as learning how to build confidence and self acceptance.
I want to support other women with their own personal growth. While I know it’s not easy for most of us, I want all women to accept themselves and feel like they can be their authentic selves.
When I’m not in the therapy office, I’m often getting bossed around by my 2 cats (Bear and Rue) - somewhat joking.
I enjoy dancing, nature walks, creative projects (even though I’m not very good), and am always up for brunch.
I replenish myself by spending time with my friends and husband. I also love traveling locally or to destinations farther away.
My Approach
In the past it was tough for me to focus on my personal growth. Opening up and handling things in a healthy way has been a challenge.
*But* I did it. I saw that, with time, it worked. With time, I felt relief. In time, I began to feel confident in myself and my ability to kindly support myself.
I’m not the most zen therapist. I’m not going to act like a few deep breaths will resolve your anxieties or problems. I will encourage you to show up as yourself because I’ll be doing the same. I will get to know you, provide you with support, and helpful education to progress your personal growth and healing. I will tell you why deep breathing can be beneficial (bare with me). I will also work with you to find out what healthy coping can realistically look like for you.
I’ve had life changing moments in therapy, and I’ve also had moments where I left unheard and knew I wouldn’t go back. I know what it’s like for someone to genuinely listen and understand where you’re coming from.
I put a lot of effort into my approach to make sure this is not the experience clients have when working with me.
My approach is based on a person-centered, trauma informed, and feminist framework. We will always be partners throughout your therapy process and you will always know what you can expect from me as I’m supporting you.
The modalities I incorporate into my sessions are practices based on ACT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, and Somatic Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy.
Lets Make it Work!
Establishing a strong rapport with clients is at the core of successful therapy. I firmly believe that when there is a genuine connection between us, it creates a safe space for openness and honesty. This, in turn, paves the way for effective progress towards achieving your therapeutic goals. Transparency and trust are key elements in our work together. I am dedicated to nurturing a relationship where you feel heard, understood, and supported every step of the way.
